Title: Loner In A Relationship.
Description:
A loner finally made his move and got into a relationship with his crush, but he still lacks confidence, romance and financial power. Let's improve his current status but remember not to overdo it in one aspect and neglect the others. Balance is key!
Self Reflection:
It was a truly wonderful experience when I finally built my first functioning game during my first gamejam – Community game jam 2019. There are a lot of stuff that I was hoping to fix or add on but time was running out so I had to reduce the scope and execute accordingly. I would appreciate any feedbacks given! Thank you!
Progress:
Day 1:
Come up with an idea where all the instructions given are wrong so the player has to figure out what is the real instruction to reach and open the door to win the game.
Drafted the menu and a few stages on paper.
Day 2:
Look at submissions by other people and realised that my idea was quite common so I decide to scrap it and come up with another idea by playing with acronyms.
Settled with "Loner In A Relationship" in the end.
Evaluated my own skillset and decided to go with a simple game concept - collectibles dropping from above and player can move on the ground to grab it.
Drafted the concept on paper.
Created the character, platform, one type of collectible and collectible generator
Day 3:
Added the other 2 power up into game.
Added win and lose conditions.
Created animated sprites for the 3 power ups.
Fail to implement the power up animation in game so use static sprite to replace it for now.
Created power up bars UI for the 3 power ups.
Fail to implement bar UI using mask method so went with alternative method instead - static variable used instead of static class
Day 4:
Created StartScene with a text
Polished bar sprites with a bit of shadow
Polished floor sprite and removed the side walls
Created background sprite
Day 5:
Create BGM for start and main scene
Create sound effect for collectibles
Implemented power up animation using animator
Implemented play again text to restart scene
Build game and test it to realise window scaling was not implemented well
Took some screenshots for submission
Made a thumbnail for submission
Wanted to do but lack of time:
BGM changing depending on player status

Change player sprite when reaching certain status

Mistakes:
No game window scaling
Start scene does not fill the screen
What I Learnt so far:
Drawing sprites takes a significant amount of time.
Implementing one feature may takes hours so sometimes it's best to delay/scrap it and focus on more core features first.
Music is not easy to make
When reseting a scene, be careful of static variables and SetActive() function

Install instructions
Use winrar to open the .rar file and run the L.I.A.R.exe file to play the game. Fullscreen mode is recommended as the window scaling is not implemented correctly.
